Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore grew up a military brat, the daughter of an American Army judge and a Scottish social worker, and spent her formative years bouncing among locales including New Jersey, Texas, Alaska, Panama and Germany. After taking an interest in acting at Frankfurt American High School, Moore obtained a bachelor's degree in drama from Boston University in 1983, then moved to New York to pursue a career as a thespian.
Upon turning professional, she found the name Julie Smith had already been registered with the Actors' Equity Assn., so she combined her first name with her mother's to form Julianne and took her father's middle name, Moore, as her new surname.
After appearing in some off-Broadway productions, Moore found work in daytime television and landed a role as a regular on the long-running soap opera "As the World Turns," for which she won a Daytime Emmy for ingenue in a drama series in 1988.
Moore's first major film role was a supporting turn in the 1992 thriller "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle," which she followed with a part in the 1993 ensemble drama "Short Cuts." In 1997, Moore achieved box-office and critical success, starring in the blockbuster sequel "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" and earning an Academy Award nomination for her supporting role as a porn star in "Boogie Nights."
Moore would subsequently earn Oscar nominations for her work in "The End of the Affair" (1999), "Far From Heaven" (2002) and "The Hours" (2002). A prolific and versatile actress, Moore has also appeared in such films as the slacker comedy "The Big Lebowski" (1998), the dystopian thriller "Children of Men" (2006) and the family drama "The Kids Are All Right" (2010). Her role as Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in the 2012 TV biopic "Game Change" won Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for lead actress.
In addition to acting, Moore is the author of "Freckleface Strawberry," a children’s book series. In 2003, Moore married director Bart Freundlich, with whom she has two children.
