Though at first indelibly associated with the time-traveling dunce he played in the “Bill & Ted” movies, Keanu Reeves segued from comedies and dark indie films to become an unlikely action star, thanks to 1991’s “Point Break” and 1994’s bomb-on-a-bus hit “Speed.”
Though Reeves passed on acting in that film’s sequel, he found himself in an even more lucrative franchise when he starred in 1999’s sci-fi action smash “The Matrix” and its two follow-ups, playing the truth-seeking Neo.
The actor, whose first name means “cool mountain breeze” in Hawaiian (his estranged father is partly of Hawaiian descent), has since alternated between big budget action-thrillers (“The Devil’s Advocate,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still”) and studio-produced character dramas (“Sweet November,” “The Lake House”), with occasional stops in comedy (“Something’s Gotta Give”) and offbeat independents (“Thumbsucker,” “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee”).
Reeves, who grew up mainly in Toronto and originally had designs on a future in hockey, played bass guitar with the band Dogstar from the mid-1990s to the early-2000s.
The handsome and youthful Reeves has never married.
