He has a nickname befit for a king — “The Sun of Mexico” — but Luis Miguel belongs to the people, or more accurately, to the ladies.
The crooner, born in 1970 to an Italian actress and a Spanish singer while the couple were vacationing in Puerto Rico, is a romantic figure whose interpretations of classic boleros (love ballads) have made him a major star throughout Latin America.
Tutored by his entertainer father, Miguel attained stardom as a child, releasing his first album at age 11. By his late teens he’d begun a fruitful career at Warner Bros. Records and found his international audience. He’s flourished in the space between heartthrobs Julio Iglesias and Ricky Martin, bringing an old-fashioned sound to young lovers of the new millennium.
Miguel rarely gives interviews, cultivating an air of mystery that only feeds the devotion of his female fans. He is a fixture at the winner’s podium at the Latin Grammys and dueted with his hero Frank Sinatra on the late legend’s “Duets II” album in 1994. Miguel was one of the first Latin stars to earn a spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, receiving the honor in 1996. He has dated pop stars Daisy Fuentes and Mariah Carey, and fathered two children with Mexican actress Aracely Arambula.
Still a young man, Miguel will undoubtedly be winning hearts and accolades for years to come.
