Max Steiner was a composer-pianist who won two Academy Awards for motion picture scores.
Steiner, regarded as the dean of composers of film music, received Oscars for the music he wrote for "Now, Voyager" and "Since You Went Away." He also scored "Gone With The Wind."
He was nominated for Academy Awards 25 times while serving as musical director for Warner Bros., RKO and Selznick International.
Steiner started composing in his native Vienna when he was 15 and came to Hollywood in 1929. His home was in Beverly Hills.
He was founder and for many years president of the Screen Composers Assn.
