Mariachi singer Jose "Pepe" Aguilar Jimenez didn’t have to search far for career aspirations. He only needed to look at mom and dad.
Born to Mexican icon Antonio Aguilar and actress Flor Silvestre, Pepe followed in his dad’s footsteps and became a prolific singer-producer-composer of ranchera and mariachi music.
In his more than two-decade career, Pepe, much like his beloved father, has amassed a huge following and notched a number of triumphs under his belt. His 1998 disc, “Por Mujeres Como Tú,” sold more than 2 million copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan, and spent an entire year on the Billboard charts.
In 2002, he was the first singer of Mexican descent to sing at the Hollywood Bowl. He’s also the first Latino to perform at the former Kodak Theatre (now known as the Dolby Theatre).
Aguilar’s most recent album, “Homenaje,” pays tribute to his father, who died in 2008. His star is placed next to his father’s.
Heralded as “The Voice” by many in the Latin music world, he has sold more than 12 million copies around the world. Aguilar has garnered four Grammys, two Latin Grammys and 13 Premios Lo Nuestro awards, which honor Latin music and are presented by the Univision television network. In February 2012, Aguilar was honored at the Premios Lo Nuestro awards with the lifetime achievement Excellence Award.
