Phil Baker's career spanned the bright lights from Broadway to television.

A leading figure of the 1920s and 1930s as an entertainer, Baker later became known as the man who started "The $64 Question" that eventually led to TV's "$64,000 Question" program.

He also starred in the 1938 movie "The Goldwyn Follies." [An earlier version of this bio, based on the 1963 obituary, incorrectly said Baker starred in "Ziegfeld Follies."] For many years he performed with comedian Jack Benny. Baker retired from show business in 1955 and moved to Denmark with his Danish-born third wife.

I think my father had a lot of musical talent, some of which I probably inherited. I only saw our dad do two shows, the second was in Wichita, Kansas where we were living during my middle teens. He came out, sat on the apron of the stage, and began telling stories. The audience roared with laughter and I then understood why he had become so famous. He seemed to know all the Hollywood stars and, one memorable evening, he invited Edward G. Robinson to share his (dad's) birthday. He told me he once "shared" a telephone pole with Humphrey Bogart at 3 a.m. They had been drinking and had decided to sit at the foot of the telephone pole to "watch the sun come up". My regret about dad was that he didn't live long enough to enjoy getting to know any of us as adults. I would have loved to tape record his reminiscences about his life in show business,
