Handsome, suave and perennially charming, Pierce Brosnan was a hand-in-glove fit for his two best-known roles: TV’s romantic detective “Remington Steele” and super spy James Bond. Brosnan was the fifth actor to play Agent 007, a role he reprised in four successful feature installments of the enduring series.
Though he acted in other spy thrillers and action films, Brosnan, not surprisingly, proved a fleet romantic comedy lead in such movies as “Mrs. Doubtfire” (a hit) and “The Laws of Attraction” (a miss).
He won a lead actor Golden Globe award nomination for his offbeat role in the 2005 comedy “The Matador.” And, in 2008, Brosnan got to sing (some believed badly) and act (more successfully) opposite Meryl Streep in the hit film version of the musical “Mamma Mia!”
The actor has been a vocal advocate for such issues as same-sex marriage, environmentalism, animal welfare and cancer awareness. His first wife of 11 years, actress Cassandra Harris, died of ovarian cancer in 1991. Brosnan married journalist Keely Shaye Smith in 2001.
