Canine Actor

Rin Tin Tin was a famous crime-fighting German Shepherd who worked in the movies, radio and later on television.

The character was portrayed by a line of several, related dogs from 1922 through 1959.

The original dog was a silent film star, first appearing as a wolf in "The Man From Hell's River" (1922), who went on to work in several "talkies." In 1931 Rin Tin Tin appeared in a 12-part serial, "The Lightning Warrior."

In his long service in films Rin Tin Tin never made less than $30,000 and sometimes upward of $65,000 per year — earning his owner, Lee Duncan, a fortune.

The original Rin Tin Tin died at the age of 14 in August, 1932. His son, Rin Tin Tin Jr. looked remarkably similar to his father and succeeded him in his film roles. The two-year-old Rin Tin Tin Jr.'s first film role was in "Pride of the Legion" (1932) for Mascot Pictures. His last film was 1939's "Hollywood Cavalcade."

The dog's stardom ended with a television series "The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin," on ABC from 1954 to 1959. Rin Tin Tin IV, a direct descendant of the original dog, starred in the latter episodes of the series.
