William Faversham was one of the greatest of the old-school matinee idols.

His roles ranged from a magnificent Romeo to the tattered old Jeeter Lester of perennial "Tobacco Road"—in a road company—and those roles ironically encompassed his rise and decline, with age, on the stage.

Faversham performed on three continents during his acting career of more than 50 years that saw him rise to wealth and lose it during his declining years.
