Castro was one of two soldiers who died Aug. 28 in Babur, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. Castro was a former Westlake High School student and football player. Castro was awarded the Bronze Star posthumously. One of his brothers, Sergeant Ryan Castro, 25, just returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq.

Eight memories of Andrew J. Castro

“

Andrew was a great person. As a few of the other comments suggest, he was definitely someone who liked to enjoy life. Once while we were in training in Arizona, some of us were eating at Buffalo Wild Wings on a Friday night and in walks Castro in an adult onesy. The entire, very packed restaurant turned to look at him as he strolled by without a word or a care in the world as if he didn't notice. He sat down right beside us and asked for a menu. One of the funniest things I've ever seen. But he wasn't just a fun person, he was a good man. I'm leaving this comment to show that I'm thinking of him, and that he left a mark on my life, though we weren't especially close. Today I'm hanging a picture of him on the Wall of Honor in the Meigs County, Ohio Veterans Outreach Center while I drop-off donations. I hope his family sees this and knows that his memory lives on with the many friends that he has made from all over the country while serving in the U.S. Army.
