Gomez was injured when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Naka, Afghanistan. He died a week later in Germany. He was the youngest of triplets. His brothers were also serving in the Army at the time he was killed.

I have so many fond memories of Billy Gomez. I still have the Vegeta and the coveted Speedy Gonzales that he gave me. He loooooved that Speedy Gonzales. The fact that he was willing to part with it when he went to Hawaii just shows what a generous person he was. We had a true friendship and a big part of my world shattered when he died. I can say with 100% honesty that I think about him every single day and he's never far from my thoughts. His family is always in my prayers. I know my grief is nothing compared to theirs and I'm so sorry for their loss. And I'm sorry that the world had to lose someone like him. He was one of a kind. I'll love you always Billy Gomez.......
