The Department of Defense has reported that Nunez died May 29, 2008 in Shewan, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when he encountered small-arms fire while conducting combat operations.

To David's Family, son's and his love. The price SFC David Nunez has paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten. He was one of the best in my class, and I will always be thankful to have met David. Every time we spend teaching each other History it was great. History was David's favorite subject, and not to forget Cynthia his fiance, another great student. They were always trying to get the highest grade in class. They were both very smart. I have good memories of David and Cynthia, and they will never be forgotten. Just remembering about how they will come to class with a big smile in their faces, it was just great to see that motivation in them. They were very happy to have found each other and they never gave up school. They stay till the end and made it through together. Cynthia, There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, always remember the love you both shared and keep moving on in life. Do not give up in College and take your next step for your next Degree. David left doing his best, for his loved ones and he left being happy knowing that he found you and was happy while you and him were together. Think about the good times and always keep his love in your heart. I know his last words and thoughts were for you and his kids. David you are a Hero to many and with much respect and admiration thank you for serving us. You will never be forgotten in our hearts. Thank You.

I'm so happy that you came into my life and now that you are gone I don't know what to do. You changed in so many ways for me and for our love. You said "I was your other half" and " that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with me" and you did. You were loving, gentle, kind, sweet, and respectful to me and I thank you for that. David you are truly missed, it is not a day that goes by that i dont think of u and the life you shared with our family i often get sad when i think about how DJ n JUJU dont have you here in the flesh to be a part of thier lives. Me and DJ talk about u a lot actually he brings u up he stated to me that at nights when he goes to sleep he feels u near him in the rm. he alsos stated that for his birthday in march he felt like u was sitting thier with him during his b-day gathering he misses you so very much As he stated the day of your homegoing at the cemetery,, u are and will always be good man and his hero. David having you in our lifes from the time u were 17 until your untimley death was a pleasure,,, no u were not as happy as u should had been but confusion took control of ur situations and the opinions of others always seem to matter to u, it doesnt matter to me what outside indivualis have to say about us they didnt and dont know the relationship that we meaning ,,your inlaws had people can say what they want to say u know and Gods know so RIP SFC David Nunez and may God continue to give your parents and Siblings the strength that they will continue to need. Sfc Nunez, with my highest respects to you, I thank you for all you have done for this country and for your family. You were a great role model for us all who entered service in the family. I joined the service in 04 because I heard all the great things you were doing as an infantry man, ranger, and special forces. I have never looked back one bit for the things I did while I was in; but it hurts so much to know that one of our own has passed on into the hands of God. Everytime I think of your brother Rene or Michael I think of you, and how much we all miss you because you were one of our own. I remember when I went to visit your dad all he could talk about was when you were a baby and as much I wanted to break down and cry because it was so emotional, I didnt. I wanted to show my respect and really listen to what he was going through. I will pay my respects to you Sfc Nunez as much as possible; for you have completed your time on earth and now God needs you. From all of us in the Munoz family, thank you for everything, and just know, no one can ever compare to what you have done for us, for country, and for your own pride and joys.
