Gonzalez was born in Mexico into an activist family. In high school, he wore a brown beret and styled himself after Che Guevara. He dropped out of UC Riverside and joined the Marines but later told a family member that he had made a mistake by enlisting.

A 14 anios de tu partida m'hijo y mi dolor no aminora, ese dolor tan grande cuando me avisaron que habias muerto en esa horrible guerra de Irak, esas palabras de los militares no las puedo olvidar, el mundo se me vino encima, pensaba en mi nietecita Lili, tan chiquita y ya perdia a su papi, mi nuera quedaba sin ti, y yo jamas te volveria a abrazar, a platicarnos cosas, a jugar contigo mi nino hermoso, he sentido que la vida no es tan buena conmigo, pues yo debi morir en lugar tuyo.
Ahora convertido en un hermoso angel nos cuidas desde el cielo, diste la vida por este gran pais y te convertiste en HEROE de esta gran nacion, partiste al cielo, al lado de Diosito, vistiendo tu uniforme de un Marine del Ejercito de los Estados Unidos, este pais que al escuchar su himno nacional o mirar su bandera me queman el alma y me brota el llanto.
Te amo m'hijo, mi HEROE!

At 14 years of your departure m'hijo and my pain does not slow, that great pain when I was warned that you had died in that horrible Iraq war, those words of the military can not forget, the world came over me, I thought In my little girl Lili, so little and lost her daddy, my daughter-in-law was left without you, and I would never hug you again, talk to you, play with you my beautiful child, I have felt that life is not so good to me, For I should have died in your place.
Now turned into a beautiful angel you take care of from heaven, you gave life for this great country and became HEROE of this great nation, you went to heaven, next to Diosito, wearing your uniform of a Marine of the United States Army , This country that when listening to his national anthem or looking at his flag burns my soul and I burst the tears.

I love you my son, my HERO!
