Luis E. Gutierrez-Rosales, 38

Gutierrez was my drill sargent when I went through Basic, at fort Jackson. He had the best heart of any person i have ever met in the military. He would sit in a chair in the barracks after marches and all of us who were hurt would line up, he would fix blisters bandage cuts, and take the time to talk to each person one on one. He made every single person feel special and important. He was also the most playful person, on march's he would sneak off into the woods and then jump out and suprise people. He was always happy, always smiling, always singing. He would whip out pictures of his his "little princess" amber. He would talk about her everyday, he was so proud to be a father. I respect him more than any other person I have met. He loved what he did, and was always excited about his job. On this day, 2 June 2009, almost two years later I had to find out that I lost my battle buddy downrange. DS Gutierrez and I were drill sergeants together in Fort Jackson 2000-2002, what a great spirit, a beautiful soul, and warm person who did nothing but spread happiness all around, he cared from the bottom of his heart. I remember one thing most if I didn't remember anything else was the love he had for his precious daughter, he talked about her day in and day out. We shared that in common because I have a daughter, so ever second we got it was about our girls. I thought of his daughter instantly today when I heard the news. My heart goes out to her. God bless you my child. His sister quoted "God doesn't want the good looking guys in heaven" I couldn't help but laugh because that is something he would say. He always came up with some off the wall stuff...lol The Soldiers laughed when he called cadence because his accent was so thick. I want to take this moment and thank my battle because he was there for me during a very rough period in my life and I truly love my brother in Christ for his caring and loving spirit and kind words of wisdom he bestowed upon me. What an angel God has added to his list. I am sure my battle is looking down and smiling that beautiful smile that he often glistened upon his face day in and down out regardless of how gloomy the some days seemed sometimes. He trained hard, he produced the best Soldiers in the U.S Army, he taught me a thing or two on how to train and fight as an Infantryman, he did what he love to do and that was to protect and serve with honor, duty, respect and selfless service!!

Blessed to you my brother, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ that you fought the good fight and finished the race. I will always have fond memories of you when we served together in Bno Company 2/505th PIR, we were a fellow NCO;s and I counted on you as a close man of integrity. I will always cherish the bond of our "Band Of Brother" the cold nights on the Drop Zones, and trudging through the jungles of Panama with our boys. I was talking with a mutual friend today Thanksgiving 2014, and just learned of your circumstance that you gave the ultimate sacrifice to our great nation along with your men.
Failure is not an option, may we see each other again when our Savior returns.
My prayers go out to your family" La Familia Mas Fuerte" Amen!

Once upon a time he was my Drill Sgt in Basic Training back on Ft.Jackson, South Carolina (Spring 2002).
He was a high seed roll model Sgt...He along with the other cadre were the finest of the finest that there were back in those days! yes Sir!..They were outstanding instructors, that taught us many important skills that later we used so many times in war.
I remember for my graduation he talked to me in Spanish,to say congratulations, and I didn't know that he knew Spanish. But, the reason he never said anything to me in Spanish during the whole training was just to keep respect and concentration he said.
I salute you on this veteran day SFC Gutierrez Luiz!

Two memories of SFC "Gut" stick out in my mind the most. I was a new soldier with A co 1-26 participating in the Soldier/NCO of the year competition during night land navigation where I didn't find one F'n point and lost my map in the snow and brush. SFC Gutierrez laughed so hard when I staggered up from the wrong direction half frozen from the snow and ice of a Germany winter night to turn in my blank result sheet. The 2nd memory is one of a miserable hot desert morning on a ECP guard shift before I had a late morning patrol. I sat there feeling sorry for myself and sweating to death I thought, when I looked up and saw 1st platoon waiting to SP on patrol, and there standing on top of his Bradley turret leaning on the "halo" was SFC "Gut" with his ever present smile laughing at me once again. Your smiles stills brings happiness and joy to me every time I remember these moments, thank you. Rest in peace Sarge.
