Kiefer Sutherland, the hard-partying son of two prominent actors, was already well established in movies when he moved on to the TV role that won him his greatest celebrity—as dashing counter-terrorism expert Jack Bauer in the hit series "24."
With his wide-set blue eyes and angular face, Sutherland wowed audiences in the unconventional drama, which creates a semblance of real time by presenting each episode as one hour in Bauer's action-filled life. The show, which first aired in 2001, has become the second-longest running espionage series in television history and is expected to overtake "The Avengers."
Sutherland had appeared in all 168 episodes as of the end of 2009 and earned numerous award nominations, winning a Golden Globe in 2002 and an Emmy Award in 2006.
Born in London in 1966, though a citizen of Canada, Sutherland is the son of Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, who lived briefly in Corona before divorcing while Kiefer was a child. The younger Sutherland rivaled his father's far-ranging career by appearing in more than 70 films, including "A Few Good Men" with Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson.
Sutherland became engaged to Julia Roberts, his co-star in "Flatliners," but made tabloid headlines in 1991 when they broke up three days before the wedding, after Roberts discovered that he had been meeting with a stripper. The tempestuous Sutherland was sentenced to 48 days in jail for drunk driving in 2007, and he was arrested by New York police in 2009 for head-butting fashion designer Jack McCollough during a barroom argument.
