Ex-beauty queen and model Sharon Stone spent 10 years toiling away in small or unremarkable film and TV roles until her 1990 appearance opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Total Recall” (and subsequent Playboy magazine spread) began to turn heads.
But it was her Golden Globe-nominated performance as brazen, bisexual serial killer Catherine Tramell in 1992’s hit erotic thriller “Basic Instinct” that put Stone on Hollywood’s A-list, where she remained for the rest of the decade.
Though she appeared in as many failures (“Last Dance,” “Gloria”) as successes (“Sliver,” “The Specialist”) during those busy years, Stone hit the jackpot again playing Robert De Niro’s opportunistic wife Ginger in Martin Scorsese’s “Casino.” She won a Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination for the challenging part.
A few years later, Stone received back-to-back Golden Globe nominations for her highly dramatic role in “The Mighty” and her comedic turn in “The Muse.”
Stone worked regularly throughout the 2000s in studio and indie features (including a failed “Basic Instinct” sequel) as well as on television, but often without the fanfare of her 1990’s heyday.
The actress, who has been married three times and has three adopted sons, has been a longtime advocate and fundraiser for AIDS research.
